Traffic light cameras in Iowa City are controversial topic

January 25th, 2012 · No Comments

The Iowa City Council is getting closer and closer to passing a law that would allow cameras to be placed on traffic lights.

The  decision to add these lights has been controversial and at the last council meeting, many spoke against the installation of cameras. Council members are almost split down the  middle with the decision and they voted 4 to 3 at the most recent proposal meeting.

Some have said that they want to vote against the law because it is really the camera companies who will be benefiting from it. Others have said that the installation of red light cameras causes an increase in the amount of rear end collisions, according to recent literature on the subject.

Several city officials have stated that the installation of cameras will increase pedestrian and motorist safety at these busy intersections.

Law allows motorcyclists to pass through red lights

January 6th, 2012 · No Comments

A new law that went into effect on January 1, 2012 allows motorcyclists and bicyclists to pass through a red light if they have waited ‘a reasonable amount of time’ without the light turning green.

This law is currently in place in the state of Illinois. It received strong opposition from lawmakers as well as police.  This law is only valid in areas with less than two million residents and cannot work at a stoplight that is activated by a timer.

There is currently not a time limit that the motorcyclists have wait at the red light. There have been propositions for a time limit to be added to the law, but those documents are still under review.

Students push to tighten Iowa helmet laws

December 21st, 2011 · No Comments

Three students in Iowa are pushing to change the helmet laws in Iowa after their friend was killed in moped accident when she was not wearing a helmet.

The state of Iowa is one of only three in the U.S. that does not have some type of helmet law. Motorcycle drivers that are under the age of 18 are required to take a safety class that is 15 hours.

The course is available to everyone and officials hope that this education will encourage people to wear helmets. Since August, the three students have been hoping to change the law so that riders under 18 must wear helmets when on mopeds and scooters. The students are hoping that after three years of doing this before turning 18, they will be in the habit of doing so.
